Prospecting – Is Everyone Your Target?

Not everyone should be considered your target. I know you are probably thinking that everyone on your 200 list was a prospect, but you are wrong. Everyone within a yardstick is not your prospect, and every occupation in the phone book that could trigger someone you know is not a prospect.

If that bursts your bubble, then I am sorry, but let’s get realistic so you can start making money in your network marketing business and stop failing miserably like you did in the last six that you joined. I don’t care how great your product or compensation plan is, if someone is not looking to generate additional income by working in this industry, then leave them alone. They are not a prospect.

If you have been in 1 or more MLM businesses, then you probably have heard that everyone you meet is a prospect and your job is to convince them to either sign up for the business opportunity or to get on your products. The problem is that the number 1 objection for getting involved in a network marketing business is that people who have been in one before no longer have any friends left to recruit or sign up as customers, because they followed those same rules.

Why then does your sponsor or Director in your MLM business keep insisting that you make the list of 200 potential prospects? The simple reason is because that is how they started. Most do not realize that this is an outdated method and usually adds fuel to the fire in giving MLM businesses a bad name.

If you are promoting your product to friends and family, that is totally ok. I am not talking about helping people you know get on good quality products or getting them to use a much needed service that most network marketing companies provide. I am referring to the recruiting methods of signing every family member and friend up in your down line so you can all make a million in 12 months.

You are probably asking then who is your target market? This would be people that are serious about starting a home based business to either supplement their income or eventually replace the one they already have. Network marketing companies have some of the finest products on the market and I believe the least expensive way to start your business is with an MLM company.

When someone mentions to you that they are looking for a part time job or a home based business that is your opportunity to promote your company, services and/or products since they have already expressed a need or desire for what you have, whether it’s the product or the opportunity to own a home based business.

In the past few years I have noticed the trend moving away from the 3 foot rule and going after the online community to promote their business. The key is to attract these prospects to you, by offering them what they are looking for. Usually this takes some trust involved and getting to know you a little better by using a newsletter, blog, or video on your website. Position yourself as an expert in your field and you will attract others to you including other leaders.

No matter what Network Marketing Company you happen to be in or the kind of MLM product or service you are marketing, or whether you plan on cold calling, advertising on the net or showing your warm market your opportunity, whatever your methods happen to be, make sure you know who your true prospects are and deliver your message directly to them. Your business will grow when you focus on your target market. Also, the quality of your team will improve, because they will be focused on building a business and not just trying to please you by buying your product and then never producing.
